I'll give you three guesses (no Googling!) . . . I'm waiting . . .
I bet more than a few of you had to look it up like I did the other night as I'm watching him light up the Warriors for 30+ points! Kawhi Leonard might just be the best player on the planet at this moment, yet none of us can recall any magical Final Four runs or pre-draft hype.
So where did he go to school? Answer: San Diego State.
Now, the Aztecs are not a "bad" program having been to NCAA Tournament 12 times, however, they aren't exactly an NCAA Powerhouse. In fact before Kawhi got there, they had never won a Tournament game.
So why did California's Mr. Basketball as a Senior at Martin Luther King High School choose San Diego State over powerhouses such as Kansas, Duke, UNC, Michigan St, etc?
In his words - "I wanted to go to a school where I could play right away, show my talent and be able to be looked at by scouts...I wanted to go to a school that loved me"
Kawhi had it right. He wanted to PLAY! As the 48th ranked player in the nation, he didn't want to take a chance of never seeing the floor. Dreams are not made on the bench! As we are seeing with the NCAA Football transfer frenzy, it's too easy for athletes and their families to get hyped up on the big name schools. We all want that headline - "So and so will be a Duke Blue Devil this Fall!" We get to show off to our friends and other families as we bask in our own glory! That feeling and fame is short lived, however, when reality hits and your child gets lost in the mix praying for a way out.
This is a choice I had to make as well in my own recruiting journey years ago and is the foundation of CollegeLogic Sports. We are dedicated to helping families find the RIGHT college fit, and not just chase the big name schools to feed our ego. I can't take credit for Kawhi making that right choice for himself, but we can certainly help you do the same!
